Guilford County North Carolinaby Tom AshworthGuilford County has been a producer in the past, but most of the gold came from lode mines. There has been reports of placers below the gold mines, so this may be of interest to the panner. MINES:Beard Mine - was a gold producer. Deep River Mine - was a gold mine. Fentress Mine - is located about 9 miles south of Greensboro. The mine is located on a quartz vein traceable for over 3 miles. It was a producer of lode gold and copper. Fisher Hill Mine - is located about 5 miles Southwest of Greensboro. It was a lode gold mine that produced lode gold with pyrite. Gardner Hill Mine - is located about 8 miles southwest of Greensboro. The mine is a lode mine, with lode gold and copper, but there are stream gravel placers in the area of the mine. Harland Mine - was a gold producer. Heath Mine - was a gold producer. Hodges Hill Mine - is located about 6 miles southeast of Greensboro. It was a lode gold with copper mine. Jacks Hill mine - about 11 miles southwest of Greensboro and 2 miles south of Jamestown, lode gold. Lindsay mine - about 11 miles southwest of Greensboro and 2 miles south of Jamestown, abandon in the 1880's, lode gold. Millis Hill mine - about 6 miles south southwest of Greenville, lode gold, pyrite. North State (McCullough) mine - about 2.5 miles south of Jamestown, on the north side of route 29, lode gold, copper. Pine Hill mine - produced lode gold. Puckey mine - produced lode gold. Twin Hill mine - about 6 miles southeast of Greenville, lode Gold. SUGGESTED PROSPECTING AREAS:Southwest part of county - produced approximately 12,000 ozs. of lode gold from 1851-1883. Area streams around lode mines - many of the area streams yield placer gold. |
